Testimonials

“I wanted to trace my childhood wanderings among the South Downs. On countless occasions I walked those hills from Kingston via Castle Hill and down to the coast. With this box I can see that route and 'feel' the very tactile Sussex landscape. Tom listened very carefully to my requirements and has made me something to treasure - an heirloom.” S Inglis, Sussex

“We wanted a box that focused on Meribel Valley and to trace where we had skiied so we decided it had to include two of the more iconic mountains in the resort. Tom was able to accommodate all our requirements and before making the box sent us a drawing so we could see exactly how it would look. A brilliant conversation piece” A Aylwin, Surrey

"We love the way the landscape of the box is forever changing.  Something to treasure always. Thank you Tom for your exceptional craftsmanship and, not least, for being such a pleasure to deal with."          M Willan, West Sussex

"The Cuillin is considered to be the most outstanding range of mountains in the British Isles, presenting exposed climbing and scrambling challenges at over 900 metres above sea level. With such dramatic shapes from sea level to tops in a compact area, I thought that it would be a brilliant subject for a contour box by Tom Aylwin. I have a passion for wood and a love of the mountains so what better way of bringing them together in a quality product by a talented woodworker ? I particularly enjoy the blend of traditional woodworking skills and values with up to the minute CNC procedures. Looking backwards and forwards at the same time."   John Plater MLA MA(RCA) FSDC

"This was a TOP PRESENT and a wonderful piece of work. We particularly liked the grain you achieved on the steep slopes, many of which are rocks (Aberedw rocks) and it really captures the wildness of the hills surrounding us.  It arrived with mum safely well before Christmas and we are thrilled to pieces. Thank you so much and I will tell and show this to all my friends (who live in interesting landscapes) as this is a really clever idea and I love the personalisation. Happy 2015 and thank you."    KB, London

This is just to say thank you for our beautiful Crowborough box, which was delivered this morning. We appreciate the very careful wrapping, it is just so lovely –  we keep touching it, opening it, shutting it, and admiring it generally.  It’s a long time since we received anything that gives such instant pleasure and we know that pleasure will continue for a long time.  You are a lucky and clever man to have such skills!  We can’t wait to show it off to friends and family. Mrs Purvis, Crowborough

"We first saw one of Tom's boxes at the Christmas Craft Fair in Midhurst. It was a commission for a map of Exmoor and immediately had our attention as my father lives in Dulverton. It was a very lovely thing and, as my son had just got married, we thought an oak box with an inscription would be a rather special present. We decided on the Cairngorms as Andrew and Laura are great walkers and love Nan Shepherd's wonderful book 'The Living Mountain'. Some weeks later I picked up the box from Tom, took it home, unwrapped it and for one whole glorious week we had it sitting on our old gate leg table in the hall.  I found myself constantly going to have a look at it. Depending on the time of day and the light in the hall the topography of the box changed. Sometimes it looked quite flat and at others it looked quite mountainous. It caused endless fascination and if my son had not come to pick it up at the end of that first week I fear I would not have been able to part with it! They now have it in their flat in London and love it - like us they love the way the landscape of the box is forever changing. Something to treasure always.  Thank you, Tom. For your exceptional craftsmanship and, not least, for being such a pleasure to deal with." K Willan, W. Sussex
